I use EyeTV with Elgato USB TV Tuner, it’s very intuitive and has built in QAM tuner. A bit expensive though compared to PC USB tuners.
That would be a good option If he was on a PC, but he’s on a Mac. Media Center Isn’t avalible for a Mac unless he runs Bootcamp.
Just use Windows 7 and Media Center. It’s VERY good

El Gato means “The Cat” in Spanish. lol Kind of a weird title for that USB device.
Slingbox will work for windows as well.
